Resin Specification
Specialized thermoplastic pellets engineered with controlled molecular weight distributions, high chemical purity, and precise rheological properties provide the raw material base for industrial filament and staple fiber extrusion. Fiber grade polymers contain tightly managed additive packages, including specialized thermal stabilizers, spin finishes, optical brighteners, and delustrants such as titanium dioxide. Common industrial fiber resins encompass polyamides, polyesters, polypropylenes, and polyacrylonitriles optimized for melt or solution spinning.
Viscosity Parameter
Intrinsic viscosity governs melt strength, chain alignment, and extrusion stability during high-speed filament drawing operations. Homogeneous melt flow prevents die swelling, pressure fluctuations, filter pack clogging, and filament breakage across multi-orifice spinnerets. Molten polymer passes through sand or metal powder filter beds before exiting thousands of capillary holes into quenching chambers.
Polymers with uneven chain length distributions experience uneven cooling, leading to filament diameter variation and irregular mechanical tenacity. Precise thermal regulation within the extruder barrel minimizes thermal degradation, crosslinking, and gel formation during continuous melt delivery.
Extrusion Behavior
Quenched filaments undergo continuous mechanical drawing over heated godet rolls to align molecular chains along the longitudinal fiber axis. This structural orientation increases crystalline density, which dictates final yarn tensile strength, elongation at break, dynamic fatigue resistance, and dimensional stability. Molten filament streams cool under controlled laminar airflow to establish uniform crystalline morphology across every single filament.
Variations in polymer moisture content or residual monomer levels trigger hydrolytic degradation during melting, manifesting as filament breaks and yarn package defects. Downstream synthetic yarn converters depend on consistent resin batches to ensure stable draw ratios, uniform dye uptake, and defect-free texturing runs.
