Substrate Fabrication
Industrial processing lines convert wood fibres, recycled paper stock and chemical additives into multi-layered, thick-caliper fibrous sheets used for folding cartons, solid bleached containers and corrugated medium. Large-scale multi-ply formers in paperboard manufacturing layer distinct fibre slurries onto moving forming fabrics, dewatering and consolidating the mat before drying and calendering stages. The process governs primary sheet weight, internal bond strength, flexural rigidity and surface smoothness.
This production category stops where light basis-weight printing papers, tissue sheets or cellulose non-wovens are formed.
Forming Operation
Headboxes deliver tailored pulp slurries onto twin-wire or multi-ply former sections where controlled vacuum dewatering establishes individual fibre orientations and ply bonding. Multi-tier press sections mechanically express free water from the wet web, raising solids content prior to steam-heated cylinder drying groups. Surface sizing stations apply starch or synthetic sizing agents to improve surface strength, water resistance and printability.
Calender stacks apply uniform heat and linear roll pressure to compact the sheet thickness and achieve specified smoothness targets. Multi-station blade coaters deposit mineral pigment formulations composed of calcium carbonate, clay and synthetic binders to create high-gloss printing surfaces. Online quality scanning systems continuously measure basis weight, caliper, moisture profile and formation uniformity, adjusting slice lips and steam valves in real time.
Specification Output
Finished reels undergo precision slitting, rewinding and sheeting according to tight customer dimensional and functional specifications. Converting lines require consistent stiffness, high Scott bond strength, uniform creasability and controlled friction coefficients to operate at standard conversion speeds. Variations in raw pulp refining, moisture profiles or coating coat-weights lead directly to carton jamming, cracked fold lines or ink blurs during die-cutting and printing.
Packaging converters qualify board suppliers against documented tear, burst and cobb sizing indices. Mill output verification requires continuous physical testing before dispatch.
